When I came to get assessed at NorthCoast Wellness Center in Carol Stream, I didn’t know what to expect. I suffered from mild tachycardia (where my heart would randomly race), and to be honest, my menstrual cycle was very inconsistent. After going to my primary care physician, I went to specialists for both of my concerns. As for my heart, it wasn’t severe enough to be put on daily medication or to have surgery but they did prescribe a medication to take when my heart started its racing rhythm, to take the medicine, and it should slow down. This didn’t sit well with me- my heart was racing for hours on end for no reason at all. The problem started when I was in high school and continued through college. At checkups, the doctor kept saying it may be stress, stop drinking caffeine, and even the good old, “you will grow out of it.” As for my menstrual cycle—it was pretty sporadic. I would have it on time two months in a row, then it would disappear for a few months, and then come back. I know what you’re thinking, and the doctor said the same thing—it’s just stress. I was a strong student, very dedicated to my academics and extracurricular activities but let’s be honest, I was under far less stress than my parents and other relatives. After being stressed about stressing for years, one of my good friends told me, “You should go see my chiropractor. He helps people with this on a daily basis.” At first I was very skeptical- why would a chiropractor be able to help me with these problems? On the other hand I thought, why not, I have nothing to lose.
I set up a consultation with Dr. Doug in Carol Stream and he explained to me what the difference is between traditional and corrective chiropractic care. He also explained to me that the nerves that come out of the spine are what control not only symptoms of pain, but they also control all the other functions of the body as well. I was aware that I had a small curvature in my back that wasn’t quite normal (my doctor noticed it in elementary school). His response was always we’ll keep an eye on it. It was obviously not a scoliosis type curvature so he didn’t have much to offer except the wait and see method. Anyways, Dr. Doug explained to me what a normal x-ray should look like from the front- that it should be nice and straight with level hips. An x-ray from the side should have a nice curve in the neck as well as the low back. As you can see from my x-rays, I had a high left hip (the x-rays are mirrored) as well as a slight curvature that should have been perfectly straight. In the upper part of my back I had another slight curvature (those are the nerves that go to the heart). I went through my corrective phase of care, and as you can see, my x-ray dramatically improved. I can also report that my menstrual cycle is completely regular and my cramps are far less intense. My racing heart became less frequent when I began getting regular chiropractic adjustments and has actually stopped occurring for the past two years. I still continue to see Dr. Doug for my maintenance adjustments. After starting corrective chiropractic care, I realized that other aspects of my life have improved as well. At night, my hips and legs used to be very achy. It was difficult for me to fall asleep. I used to think that I was overtired from the day. – What I know now though is that my biomechanics were deviated from normal and that was adding unnecessary stress to my body. Corrective chiropractic care has truly changed my life and I am grateful for meeting the team at NorthCoast Wellness Center.
