Most of us have had a headache at least once in our life. If you think back to that moment when it started— how did it feel? What did it keep you from accomplishing that day? Did you skip going grocery shopping, miss work, or not attend a family party? Now imagine having that headache not once a month or once a week but every three days or even every day. More than 4 million Americans experience chronic migraines (at least 15 migraines per month). About 38 million men, women, and children are affected by migraines in the U.S. About 10% of school age kids suffer from migraines. Headaches and migraines are becoming so common that some people even think they are normal. I want to be the one to tell you, Headaches are NOT NORMAL. A headache is your body’s way of signaling you that something is not right. Chronic, recurring headaches, which can be the most serious, are one of two major types- migraine and tension. Migraine headaches will prevent people from living an active life and enjoying friends and family time. Tension headaches can lead to overuse of pain relievers such as Tylenol and Excedrin. If that doesn’t work, lay in a dark room with no noise. If the headaches persist, traditional treatment provided by doctors is often antidepressants, beta blockers, anti-seizure medications, or Botox injections. If these do not work, people begin to look at alternative therapies including acupuncture, biofeedback, massage, and chiropractic care.
That’s where NorthCoast Wellness Center comes in. Our office in Carol Stream offers corrective chiropractic care. I know what many of you are thinking- chiropractic is for neck pain and low back pain and sciatica, it can’t help me with my headaches. Dr. Doug looks at the structure of the neck- specifically the curvature in the neck and the positioning of the top three vertebrae in the neck. These vertebrae sit very close to our brainstem, arteries and nerves also travel through the foramen (holes in the vertebrae) which supplies blood to the head and brain. With restoring the normal curvature in the neck as well as working with the tight muscles in the neck and shoulders, we have helped many chronic migraine and headache sufferers get to the root cause of their symptoms rather than just manage them. To know if corrective chiropractic can potentially help a patient’s headaches, the first place we start is with a consultation and thermographic testing.
